Children fascinate me. My mother, a practicing pediatrician was the first to introduce me to the field. Since my initial exposure I have nourished an interest in pediatrics. Pediatrics appeals to me because it will allow me to combine all of my interests. As a pediatrician I will be an advocate for children and provide them and their families with education and support. For me an important aspect of pediatrics is the preventive strategy, from vaccinations to teaching children healthy lifestyles. I believe the habits we acquire during childhood stay with us for life. Serving as a role model for children and educating them as they make crucial decisions is both rewarding and gratifying. I am drawn to working with young people and developing a growing relationship with them as they mature.

When I entered into medical school I was eager to learn about the different types of specialties. As I gained knowledge of about each field my desire to pursue a career of pediatrics solidified. Through my core pediatrics clerkship rotation and my electives my interest in the discipline was reinforced and my exposure to the subspecialties illustrated the diversity of pediatrics to me. Working along side pediatricians and observing their enjoyment and enthusiasm for their work was contagious.

My experience working at an orphanage for children in South America with a variety of medical illnesses allowed me to provide them with medical attention, nourishment, and compassionate care. Working with underprivileged patients from a different background required me to take my communication skills and understanding abilities to a new level. At the orphanage I saw the resiliency of my young patients and developed an admiration for children and their selfless thoughtfulness toward others. While volunteering at bedtime storytelling at a local hospital I had the opportunity to interact with children from nearby communities. I furthered my appreciation for pediatrics and the diverse and unique illnesses encountered in the field. I had the opportunity to educate my patients about their diseases and provide support and reassurance for the entire family.

I believe I possess the drive and the determination to succeed in pediatrics. My volunteer experiences have shown my communication skills and my ability to listen and relate to those from different backgrounds. These skills have allowed me to build enjoyable relationships with my patients, their parents and my co-workers. I am passionate about pediatrics and have great enthusiasm for learning. Moreover, I am strong-minded and work through problems in a thorough and methodical manner. During my training I have worked as a member of a team and understand the importance of team work and achieving a common goal.

I am looking for an academic program which serves a diverse population of patients and stimulates intellectual curiosity. I am interested in contributing to academic medicine through clinical teaching and research and to provide comprehensive care to patients and their families. My plan for the future is to pursue fellowship training in a subspecialty. I plan to be involved in community programs and teaching opportunities both inside and outside of medicine.
