PEDIATRIC PERSONAL STATEMENT

“I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” I would always joke.  I was trying to be funny, but I really had not decided which area of medicine was right for me.  Thinking back through my various clerkships, I remember enjoying Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Urology, and Orthopedics.  I was curious at the eclectic mix of specialties until their correlation hit me: during each of these clerkships, I was working with children.  It wasn’t necessarily the medicine that I was practicing, but the patient population that I was seeing that got me excited.  I finally realized that Pediatrics was where I belonged all along.  It was like I had a pair of shoes made just for me – it was a perfect fit.

This all made sense when I considered that I started my medical career as a weekly volunteer at The Children’s Hospital.  I had the opportunity to see the resiliency and positive attitudes of the children while I helped in the Aikman’s End Zone play area.  This experience afforded me a glimpse of how fascinating children can be.  My third-year Pediatrics clerkship taught me that caring for children opens up an entirely new world.  A special bond forms between the Pediatrician, the patient, and the parents; the physician must be an advocate for the child, while working with the parents for the best outcome.  The connection is continually changing from the newborn nursery through the adolescent clinic.  Pediatrics will allow me to care for people during the most dynamic years of their lives.

My career goal is to become a primary care physician for children and youth.  It is here, on the front lines of medicine, that I can make the greatest difference. I have a strong desire to establish long-term relationships with patients and become an integral part of their lives during their physical, mental, and emotional development.  I look forward to the constantly changing landscape of a child’s care, including a first well-baby visit, numerous childhood illnesses, and school physicals.  As a Pediatrician, I will also have the unique opportunity to engage in primary prevention and education.  From vaccinations in an infant population to STDs in adolescents, along with the growing issue of childhood obesity, Pediatricians are accountable for the health of the next generation.  By providing education for development of healthy habits, I will be able to encourage long-term healthy lifestyles.

With my enthusiasm, desire to learn, and love for children, I can develop my clinical skills and become an outstanding Pediatrician.  I have a strong ability to communicate and establish a level of trust with patients of all ages, which will help me calm the nerves of a new mom in the middle of the night or reassure a frightened child during an examination.  I also have a flexible personality, which will allow me to deal with the constantly changing atmosphere of Pediatrics.  I want to train in a residency program where I can develop my cognitive medical knowledge while staying in touch with the humanistic side of medicine.  I look forward to stepping into a program where I can take on patient care and begin meeting the challenges of life as a Pediatrician.
