INTERNAL MEDICINE PERSONAL STATEMENT
Internal medicine has always been the most fascinating field for me throughout medical school. It provides the intellectual challenge, the gratification from patient management, and the opportunity to obtain a solid and broad medical knowledge base. It was very natural for me to choose Internal Medicine as my specialty after medical school. Two years of residency training in China confirmed that Internal Medicine was the most fulfilling and exciting specialty. In addition to the solid clinical training in internal medicine, my residency triggered a strong interest in research. Having developed a new career goal to work as a research physician in the future, I decided to come to the U.S. to pursue formal training in basic research. After completing my Ph.D. study on the functional mechanism of an oncogene Bcl-3 at University Medical School, I resumed my residency training in internal medicine this summer.
Knowing that one extra year of training as an intern will refresh my clinical skills after a time away from medicine, and make me a stronger candidate for residency match, I started my residency at St. Hospital. My current program is a solid community based program with great emphasis on education and excellence training in primary care, and the residents here are generally highly skilled and knowledgeable, but because I have developed such a strong interest in academic medicine, and because I want to perform both basic research and clinical medicine in the future, I feel a university-based program is a better fit for me, and now is the time for me to move to a university based program.
I am eager to attend your program because of its strong academic aspects. Your program offers a tremendous training opportunity, which will allow me to gain exposure to a broad spectrum of pathology. Furthermore, your program offers guidance, while maintaining autonomy, allowing me to address some challenges on my own. However, the most influential factor of your program is the faculty. Last year, I had a wonderful experience working with the renal consult team at Large Medical Center. I was truly impressed by the level of professionalism and the overall excellence of the faculty members, among whom I am confident I will be able to find role models to inspire in me a passion for learning. In addition to the residency program, I am also very attracted to your cancer institute, I am confident that the prominent research at your cancer institute, in addition to its excellent clinical training, will provide me the best opportunity to pursue an academic medicine career in hematology/oncology, the field that I hope to eventually specialize in.
I believe that in addition to my two years clinical experience in China, my additional year of internship at St. X hospital will provide a valuable foundation to an academic training program in internal medicine. The clinical skills in ambulatory care, the experience in evaluating patients and formulating management plans for inpatient admissions, the clinical judgment in the care of critically ill patients in the ICU,and the exposure to both suburban and inner city patient populations I gain this year can only enhance the next 3 years of my training at an academic medical institution in internal medicine.
