My interest in medicine began simply, as a natural aptitude for the sciences. What inspired me towards a career in medicine was the desire to be a benefactor of people while being consistently challenged intellectually. During the third year of medical school the changeover from a naive classroom atmosphere to the hands-on clinical experience on the wards and outpatient clinics changed my perspective towards my occupation. I began to understand the need to practice not just my knowledge and skills, but also compassion and care towards a patient. As I rotated through various specialties, I discovered each has its commendable ways of dealing with disease. I found my rotations in Internal medicine to be especially challenging and rewarding.
Every case I came across from COPD exacerbations, renal failure, to cardiogenic shock and were engrossing learning experiences. The pathophysiology I learned earlier began to make sense and unravel the perplexing yet gripping nature of diseases and anchored my interest in medicine. I enjoyed the methodical approach of accurately diagnosing and precisely treating patients back to health. The sense of trust and hope that is established in the physician-patient relationship through comforting conversations with patients has taught me that a physician’s responsibility goes beyond prescribing drugs. In hindsight I realize that it is the varying gamut of diseases; the personal level of interaction of patients that has guided me towards internal medicine.
My one-year internship and subsequent 20 months of employment at a local hospital as an internist provided me with extensive hands-on clinical experience. Particularly this stretch equipped me with competency required in handling emergency cases as well as ambulatory and in-patient care. As a result I am certain I have the hard work ethics required of internists. There are other important lessons I have learned during my clinical experience as well. I now recognize that, throughout a physician’s career, one is a teacher as well as a student and must always possess the zest to learn and take steps for the development of the field. I also value the emphasis internal medicine stresses on prevention which is the cornerstone of cost effective health care.
At present, I am enrolled in Master’s in Public Health program at West University, which is giving me a stronger understanding of health problems in the US. My experience as an observer in the department of Internal medicine at West University has given me further US clinical experience. My decision to complete residency in the United States because of the opportunities available. Internal medicine provides physicians with an intermediate level of specialization and requires sound knowledge. I have worked hard to develop my skills to be at the front line of developing medicine and treatments.
I want to pursue a program that champions the cause of academic and clinical teaching, and emphasizes research by residents. I want to work in a hospital that nurtures a healthy learning environment based on open communication and where faculty and residents work as a team. I will deliver to my residency program my distinct earnestness, sincerity and unflinching hard work. My aspiration is to follow up my residency with a fellowship and to be an academician in a teaching hospital.
I believe that I have the drive and judgment to embark on this inspiring and challenging journey. I am preserving and enthusiastic enough to outshine at any venture and have the compassion and dedication towards medicine that will carry me forward. From my family I have learned the values of hard work, honesty and commitment to my goals. I eagerly await a new set of opportunities and challenges helping me into becoming a better physician, who has the skills and compassion, to treat each patient with my highest capacity.
