Life is full of adventures. The adventures that we take dictate the places that we were meant to be. I have been very fortunate to have experienced many different things in my life and have been to the crossroads many times. I know now that the decisions that I have made have serendipitously lead me to becoming an emergency medicine physician. This desire was ingrained in me a few years before attending medical school and was probably the single most important reason why I wanted to become a physician.
My experiences as a paramedic always left me thirsty for more knowledge, more challenges, and more responsibilities. It instilled in me the want to pursue emergency medicine to the fullest.

I have always been an open person with a wide variety of interests. My clinical rotations exposed me to several positive experiences. In cardiology I learned how to determine what aspect of the heart was in trouble which warranted quick assessment and action. In OB/GYN, I experienced the delivery of numerous babies, emergency c-sections and ectopic pregnancies. In pediatrics I learned what to watch for when a sick child presents. In trauma I learned many of the acute procedures that go into stabilizing a patient. In orthopedics I studied the numerous fractures and the appropriate reduction techniques and stabilizations. Also the numerous medicine cases I experienced with endless possibilities.

It made me realize the only way to incorporate all these interests and the various complex decisions was through the variety of emergency medicine. I learned that I was well suited for this profession because I enjoyed being the primary contact to patient care and I thrived on acute patient care. I was fascinated by how medical cases initially presented and also how some cases seemed initially similar but ended up being so different. I also realized that the acute procedures were very fulfilling to me. Emergency medicine offers all the aspects of medicine that I am best suited for. I enjoy the fast pace and work best in this type of setting.

My past experiences as a professional hockey player, computer programmer, paramedic, professional stunt man/actor, and my volunteer work, I believe makes me a well rounded individual. Being well rounded and having a great sense of humor, in my opinion, are invaluable attributes in the world of emergency medicine. I feel it helps you embrace and relate to a wide patient demographic that I will continue to experience. I seek a residency program that will challenge me and continue to expose me to many different medical situations that I will be able to build upon and become the best emergency medicine physician that I can possibly be. I also seek the opportunity to be involved in research projects that can have a direct effect on patient care and further progress the specialty of emergency medicine. As an attending emergency medicine physician, I plan to maintain my EMS ties and will consider pursuing a position as a Project Medical Director. I also see myself involved in a teaching environment.

With my desire, drive, and work ethic coupled with my past experiences as a paramedic, I feel I will be able to make an immediate impact to any post-graduate emergency medicine program. This will allow me to progress at a faster pace and allow me to be an integral part of a team atmosphere. Fulfilling my dream in becoming an emergency medicine physician is the feeling of finally coming home, and “no journey is too great, when a man finds what he seeks.”
