As a child growing up in Africa, I experienced the AIDS epidemic first-hand. Determined to act on this public health nightmare, I told my parents that I would find the cure for AIDS. Today, as I approach the end of my medical studies, my passion for utilizing my medical knowledge to help others is just as strong. Although I cannot single-handedly find the cure for AIDS, I know my determination and hard work will make significant contributions to the worldwide struggle. My father[not important what profession your father has there]instilled in me a keen sense of responsibility to look after all people. My future goal as an emergency medicine physician is to facilitate the sharing of healthcare resources and expertise between my present home of America, and my childhood home of Africa.
Emergency medicine appeals to me because it encompasses wide spectrum of medical and surgical conditions requiring strong technical skills, diagnostic acumen, and empathy. It also requires constant vigilance and provides a greater opportunity to combine the deliberative skills of medicine with the hands-on approach of surgery along with the insight of pediatrics. It offers me the chance to utilize both technical and leadership skills, with it’s diverse and exciting patient base. I recall a patient who presented in the Emergency Department with severe tetany. This was due to a rare entity known as Gittleman’s Syndrome. My motivation to become an Emergency Room Physician was apparent when I witnessed and was involved in her acute management. This and other experiences have made me realize the value of becoming familiar with the acute care setting. In this high stress environment, physicians face challenges of the utmost importance, which require a strong commitment to medicine.
I have always pursued my medical career with the goal of broadening my experiences. I have been fortunate to experience my entire clinical training in the United States along side U.S. Medical students, residents, and faculty, at various teaching hospitals. I bring to my residency program my unique cultural background and international perspective, along with fluency in English, Swahili, and three tribal languages. With experiences living in several different countries, and now as a permanent U.S. resident, I have learned to quickly adapt to new situations and challenges, a talent that I use to my patients advantage. I have developed strong skills in organization and multi-tasking, which allow me to function in rapidly-changing environments.
I bring with me a strong work ethic, desire to excel, and modesty to serve those whose health care needs have been entrusted to me. Training in a culturally diverse environment will provide me with a strong foundation and background from which I could build my own medical career. I hope to develop a volunteer exchange program that will serve as a bridge between the underserved African population and skilled medical practitioners from developed countries. As Third World nations benefit from the influx of medical talent and equipment, volunteer doctors will also be able to experience medicine in a new and challenging environment. Not only will such doctors gain valuable experience in the management of acute illness and trauma and the exacerbation of chronic diseases in resource-poor areas, but the communications established between the “front lines” and the research centers of the West will facilitate global public health initiatives.
I am eager to begin my residency in emergency medicine, so that I can gain the training necessary to become a well-rounded and confident physician, capable of handling the many challenges of providing medical care in a fast-paced environment. I am certain that my residency in emergency medicine will round out my existing medical expertise, and provide me with the tools necessary to succeed on my own.
